A “historic decision” for the two EU member states, 13 years after the European Commission’s initial recommendation.

As of January 1, citizens of Romania and Bulgaria will enjoy free movement within the Schengen Zone, following today’s decision by the EU’s interior ministers to grant full membership status to the two countries.

The decision was made after Austria’s veto was lifted, as the country agreed to the deal on the condition that certain random checks at land borders would be maintained.

The agreement provides for the introduction of controls at land borders between Romania and Hungary, as well as between Romania and Bulgaria, for at least six months in order to “prevent serious threats to internal security.” This measure addressed Austria’s objections, while several interior ministers attending today’s meeting also emphasized the need to strengthen internal security.

However, as of March 31, border checks at airports in both countries will no longer be in effect.

The Hungarian presidency of the EU Council, which had made the full inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen Zone a priority, hailed the development as a “great victory for Bulgaria, Romania, and all of Europe.” Similarly, Austria’s Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, described it as a “historic moment” upon his arrival at the meeting.

The European Commission, which had recommended their accession as early as 2011, expressed its full satisfaction with today’s decision. “Full members of Schengen — where you belong,” said the Commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also commented on the development, stating that “a strong Schengen means a safer and more united Europe.”

The Schengen Zone, regarded as one of the most significant achievements of European integration alongside the single market, currently includes 29 countries and facilitates free movement for nearly 450 million citizens.

What does everyone visiting Northern Greece need to know this year?

After last year’s huge success, the “Tourism Festival” in Ofrynio Beach returns again, full of special surprises. Kourtidis Group of Companies, which implemented it for the first time in 2023 with the aim of highlighting all the important points of tourist interest located in the wider region of Kavala, Drama, Serres and Thassos, announces the new date of its event.

With the motto “365 days of experience”, the most special festival of tourism of Northern Greece starts on Thursday the 4th of July and ends on Saturday the 6th of July. It will take place in the specially landscaped gardens of Kourtidis Group’s headquarters, in Ofrynio Beach and the official Opening Ceremony is on Thursday July 4th at 21:00.

The Goal

The aim is that every visitor to Northern Greece should get to know and discover the incredible “secrets” of the wider coastal region from the Strymonian Gulf to Thassos, as well as the prefectures of Serres, Kavala and Drama.

26 booths and more than 30 exhibitors present the most beautiful spots of our region, at the “2nd Tourism Festival” which is free of charge for everyone. In addition, the dozens of exhibitors (regional units, municipalities, theme parks, museums, archaeological sites, caves, wineries, information centers, etc.) participate without any charge.

It is a basic philosophy for Kourtidis Group to develop, promote, advertise and support the place, the institutions and all places of tourist visit, education and family entertainment.

The parallel events

One of the surprises of the Festival is the parallel operation of a unique Instagrammable Theme Park with free admission for the public.

Three-dimensional constructions make up a special frame of summer photos for young and old alike. Huge ice creams, angel wings, colourful macarons, delicious chocolates, the screen of an old TV and a huge camera… are some of the 3D exhibits that make up Europe’s first summer Instagrammable theme park.

In addition, visitors will be able to enjoy a special guided tour of the open-air Cine History on site.

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF) announced the beaches, marinas and tourist boats of our country that received this distinction.
