The celebration of Clean Monday

Clean Monday is a movable holiday celebrated 48 days before Easter Sunday and this year it is celebrated on February 27.

This day marks the beginning of Lent on the one hand, and the end of Apokries on the other, and was named by the Christians, as body and spirit are “cleansed” with the beginning of the fast. A fast which lasts for 40 days, exactly the same as Christ’s fasting days in the desert.

There are various customs throughout Greece related to this celebration, with perhaps the most characteristic one being the kite flying. This favorite tradition of mainly young children also has its symbolism: the flying of the kite resembles the human spirit, which was created not to stay on the earth, but to fly in the heavens, and in this way we come a little closer to God. Many are those who do not simply buy their kite, but begin preparations days before Holy Monday, and “build” it from scratch themselves. It is an “art” that in many families is taught from generation to generation.

But apart from the kite, this day is of course combined with specific dishes, always in the context of the fasting mentioned above. Lagana (a type of bread produced only on that day), halva, bean soup, taramas, are flavours that are not missed from any table on the day of Clean Monday.

In Ofrynio Beach – Costa Ofrynio, as in the rest of Greece, Koulouma, as it is usually called, is celebrated with fun, good food, traditional music, and good company. Many people (locals, people from the surrounding areas and tourists) enjoy the Aegean breeze by flying kites on the beach, having fun at local events, or visiting one of the fish taverns.

A walk to Panagia

Panagia is the old town of Kavala. Built on a peninsula, it brings together all the history of the city: The 15th century fortress made of granite, bricks and marble, with the central circular tower offering a panoramic view. The Khalil Bey Mosque (also known as the Old Music), pink outside, blue inside. The “konaki” of Mehmet Ali (born in Kavala in 1769 and destined to become the founder of modern Egypt), divided into male and female sections, shelamlik for some, haremlik for others. Imaret, once an Islamic seminary, housed in an Ottoman baroque complex with leaded domes, now a boutique hotel. The mansion on Poulidou Street, which was, among other things, the headquarters of the Ohrana during the Bulgarian occupation of World War II. Take a walk to see the landmarks of an important old metropolis of the Greek North.

Egnatia Highway: Easier access for travellers to the beaches of Kavala

From 27 May, Egnatia Highway will facilitate the road transport of travellers to the beaches of the western coast of Kavala and beyond.

Specifically, in view of the summer season, the branch of the Egnatia Highway from the city of Kavala to the on-grade junction of Agios Andreas, which serves the traffic -among others- to Nea Peramos and Nea Irakleitsa, is returned to traffic.

For the time being, however, the toll plaza at the uphill junction will not operate and the passage of vehicles will be free of charge until further notice, while its canopy will be installed within three days of the road being opened to traffic.

Subsequently, by 3 June, the branch of the Egnatia road from Agios Andreas to Thessaloniki, where there is no MAP, is expected to be opened to cars. The timetable of the works was discussed during a recent meeting of the responsible deputy regional governor, Alexios Politis, with the Director of Operations and Maintenance of “Egnatia Highway S.A.”, Konstantinos Pardalis and the head of the company’s Projects and Maintenance Department, George Taliotis, at the offices of the Regional Unit of Kavala.
