A walk to Panagia

Panagia is the old town of Kavala. Built on a peninsula, it brings together all the history of the city: The 15th century fortress made of granite, bricks and marble, with the central circular tower offering a panoramic view. The “konaki” of Mehmet Ali (born in Kavala in 1769 and destined to become the founder of modern Egypt), divided into male and female sections, shelamlik for some, haremlik for others. Imaret, once an Islamic seminary, housed in an Ottoman baroque complex with leaded domes, now a boutique hotel. The mansion on Poulidou Street, which was, among other things, the headquarters of the Ohrana during the Bulgarian occupation of World War II.
